According to China customs data, the country imported 11.79 million tonnes of bauxite in November 2022, which recorded a month-on-month hike of 31.29 per cent from 8.98 million tonnes and a year-on-year surge of 53 per cent. From January to November 2022, China’s total bauxite imports amounted to 115.4 million tonnes, an increase of 16.9 per cent year-on-year. Being the primary supplier, Guinea exported 7.28 million tonnes – 65 per cent more than the previous month and 125 per cent higher than a year earlier. The main reasons for the surge in exports were the hearsay that Indonesia would ban bauxite exports, which made Chinese alumina refineries favour Guinean ore as an alternative, increased enthusiasm among Chinese refineries to stock up bauxite at the end of 2022, ramp up of production...

On January 11, 2023, one of the largest aluminium smelters in Europe, Aluminium Dunkerque's spokesperson, said that the primary aluminium producer had begun resuming production capacity that had been idled when it was stung by skyrocketing electricity prices last year. The spokesperson added that the site, which reduced output by around a fifth in the fourth quarter, is expected to reach full capacity by May 2023. Several factors contributed to the move, including easing French power prices and government support for energy-intensive industries. Aluminium production in Europe has dropped to its lowest level since the 1970s as rising energy costs dealt a crushing blow to this energy-intensive industry.

To scale up production capacities and adequately meet the increase in demand, the Aluminium Association of India (AAI) said on Tuesday that an investment of roughly INR 4 lakh crore would be needed. By 2030, India's demand for aluminium will increase exponentially from the current 4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 10 MTPA. Representatives of the aluminium sector have requested government assistance to support this difficult time as they face difficulties from increased foreign imports, a shrinking market share, and rising prices. The high cost of obtaining raw materials is a significant barrier to luring new investments, according to the companies that make aluminium. "This is stifling the development of the aluminium sector, including the domestic scrap landscape," said AAI. According...
