According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. Japanese traders are seeking to increase sales of European secondary aluminum alloy to local diecasters making automotive components, industry sources said Tuesday. One diecaster source with three plants in west Japan, making engine parts, said offers from Japanese traders for European ADC12 aluminum alloys started to increase in July. "We cannot switch raw materials suddenly as we need to talk to our customers. We use mostly local and some Chinese-origin material. Elizabeth Freeman, organizer of the annual Festival of Lights, is looking for recycled aluminum cans to create new ornaments for a nine-foot tall tree called “If Can, Can” that will be part of this year’s festival, according to a news release. About 200 colorful cans are needed for the project. Four of the eight recycling collection sites in Nassau County have been closed. The Nassau County Commission approved the removal of recycling bins at Burney Park near American Beach, License Road in Yulee, the County Building on Mickler Street in Callahan and in Hilliard near CR 108, effective Oct. 1. The former sites accepted brown, green and clear glass, newspaper, office paper and aluminum. The aluminium packaging sector is on course to reach its 2012 recycling targets and should achieve the increased targets for 2017, according to Rick Hindley, chief executive of the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro). Addressing an audience at the organisation's annual seminar in Birmingham yesterday, Hindley predicted that in 2012 the aluminium sector would reach its target. Novelis has opened an aluminium recycling and casting center in South Korea as part of a $400m expansion project. The Yeongju recycling center is the firm’s first major step in the plan to increase recycling capacity to 2.1 million tons by 2015. The facility will have an annual capacity of 265,000 tons, and will increase the company's total consumption of recycled aluminium to over 1.4 million tons per year. ( AA ) announced the signing of a tentative long-term power contract with Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) for its Intalco Works aluminum smelter in Ferndale, Washington.
