According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. The South African government has clarified how it calculates the price preference on aluminium scrap to the local market under a newly-implemented scrap export policy in an amendment notice, published in the Government Gazette, on November 15. Recycling of used Norwegian drink cans will soon be even more environmentally friendly. The recycling process is moving from France to Hydro in Holmestrand. Norwegians are world champions in returning cans for recycling, and close to half a billion beer and soda cans will be collected and recycled this year. Now the collection company Norsk Resirk has entered into an agreement with Hydro to recycle the cans at Hydro's recycling plant in Holmestrand. This is currently done by a company in France. With its water jets that cleanly restore aluminum signs that would otherwise require a lot of carbon to reuse, Prineville’s Northwest Sign Recycling has become one of Oregon’s most innovative companies. Northwest Sign Recycling hydrostrips aluminum road signs, using jets of water — some 37,000 pounds per square inch — to remove old sign laminates and restore blank signs to a smooth reusable surface. The company’s process extracts any leftover laminate fragments by vacuum, which officials say allows for “nonhazardous disposal of the waste.” Such laminates include engineer grade, high intensity and diamond grade reflective sheeting that’s typically used on aluminum signs. UK aluminium scrap prices fell on Wednesday November 20, as much of the market seemed to shut up shop ahead of the year-end, and aluminium ingot business remains confined to previously contracted deals. “It’s as if people have written off the rest of the year,” one ingot producer said. “There are very good projections for next year, but it’s as if this year’s been forgotten.” Scrap dealers, faced with weakening prices, are in some cases opting to hold on to their material rather than selling it into a falling market.
