According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. The aluminum processor Aleris Corp., based in Cleveland, has withdrawn its $500 million initial public offering (IPO), citing uncertain economic conditions. According to Reuters, the decision to rescind the offer comes three years after the Aleris had earlier sought to sell shares in the company. The owners of Aleris include the private equity firms Oaktree Capital Management LP, a unit of Oaktree Capital Group LLC, and Apollo Global Management. Over the past 12 months, the company has attempted to position itself to take advantage of the expected surge in aluminum demand from the auto industry. Metal recycling giant EMR has opened its third scrap metal recycling depot in Sheffield. The Halfway facility, situated at the former SITA site on Holbrook Industrial Estate in Halfway, buys all grades of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal including iron, steel, copper, brass, aluminium, lead, scrap cars, boilers and farm scrap. Sheffield Halfway EMR already operates depots on East Coast Road in Attercliffe and Herries Road South in Hillsborough. The new webbing is standard and at no extra cost in the brand’s range of aluminium façade, window and door systems. Using webbing made from recycled polyamide for thermal insulation reduces the consumption of natural resources and improves the sustainability of the products – and well before this becomes a legal requirement. The mines ministry will look into the issue of import duty on scrap, special additional duty and trade pacts with countries, Union minister Vishnu Deo Sai said on Thursday. The Metals Recycling Association of India said that metal recycling has been badly affected by heavy import duty, special additional duty (SAD) regime and certain free trade agreements (FTAs) with countries. A disparity is noticed in the scrap aluminium market where the secondary aluminium alloy prices have weakened despite the strong gains in the North American Special Aluminium Alloy Contract (Nasaac). Analysts believe that the dip in the prices is caused by an excessive supply of alternative ingots in the market. Since there is plenty of cheap aluminium scrap available, the production of RSI (remelt scrap ingot) has risen, say industry participants. This causes the secondary alloy prices to slow despite the upward trend in the Nasaac, where the cash contract was seen to be $1,995 per ton at the closing of the LME session on February 2, rising 2.4% from January 29 price of $1,910 per ton. The price however fell to a balance of $1,926 per ton at the close of February 3 session.

Weston Aluminium says the viability of its remelting plant has already been eroded by rising gas and electricity price hikes.
