According to SMM survey statistics, the operating rate of the secondary aluminium alloy industry in September was 35.0 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points M-o-M but down 6.7 percentage points Y-o-Y. Industry production continued its recovery trend, but the overall operating level remained below the same period last year. On the demand side, September marked the traditional peak consumption season, with downstream orders recovering from August. End-use demand from automobiles and other sectors improved marginally, but the peak season effect has yet to fully materialise. On last Saturday, November 17, the City of Tallahassee in collaboration with Keep Tallahassee Beautiful project held its annual Cans for Cash event. The city has been organizing this event for more than 20 years. The purpose of this event is to reduce landfill waste and space in the city. People were paid 30 cents for each pound of cans they dropped off. On average, the event collects more than 1,000 pounds of used aluminium beverage cans each year. The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has urged the Government to include drink cans and bottles in deposit return scheme (DRS). CPRE said its volunteers in the Green Clean collected a total of 11,212 cans and bottles of all shapes, sizes and materials. According to an update from Shanghai Metals Market, Dazhou town in Henan province required all secondary aluminium producers to suspend their operations for installing environmental equipment. Packaging solutions company Tetra Pak has entered into partnership with global resource management company Veolia to recycle all used beverage cartons components collected within the European Union to be recycled by 2025. The average beverage carton comprises around 75% paperboard, 20% plastic and 5% aluminium foil. Poland imported US$230.5 billion worth of goods from all over the world in 2017, out which aluminium accounted for 5.7 per cent of the total imports of the country. However, aluminium scrap imports by Poland in terms of volume decreased year-on-year in 2017, although the cost stood higher. Nevertheless, in 2018, Poland’s aluminium scrap import is estimated to increase from the two former years and stand at 257,202 tonnes. In 2017, the import volume was at 233,258 tonnes, in contrast, while in 2016, it was at 246,862 tonnes. The Advisory Committee on Packaging (ACP) in the UK has urged the competition regulators to investigate the possibility of illegal restrictive practices in the responsibility scheme for aluminium packaging recycling. The Committee expresses concern over the current price for packaging recovery notes (PRN/PERN) which has risen to around £100 per tonne. Such higher prices are seen when packaging recovery targets are missed, but, data shows the targets are likely to be achieved comfortably this year. Emirates Global Aluminium has signed a deal with Abu-Dhabi based construction and building materials company Arkan to supply them with spent pot lining from its smelting operations. Arkan will use these waste materials to manufacture cement. However, it is not clear yet that how much or how often EGA will deliver the wasted product to Arkan. Spent pot lining is the used inner lining of aluminium smelting pots, which is worn out and replaced every four to five years. After a sweeping rise last year, Mexico’s aluminium scrap import is likely to see a plunge in 2018 from 317,561 tonnes to 266,558 tonnes, found the global export-import data. The Fairchild Medical Center Auxiliary is now collecting tabs from soda cans to help raise money for dialysis patient treatment. The collected tabs are taken to the Rogue Valley Dialysis Center in Medford, Oregon. The hospital sends them to be recycled and the money generated by the recycling goes into the Rogue Valley Dialysis Patient Trust Fund.
