Every Can Counts (ECC) has unveiled a giant art installation outside Trafford Centre to highlight the importance of recycling during Recycle Week 2026 (14th – 20th September). The Infinity Sculpture, made from more than 1,200 recycled drink cans, has been created to illustrate the life cycle of a drink can, highlighting that aluminium can be recycled time and time again. Vedanta’s net-zero transition investments cross $1 billion; Renewable energy use surges 52 per cent Y-o-Y to 4 billion units

As India rapidly expands renewable energy and electrification to meet its growing energy needs, Vedanta Group is strengthening its position across the energy transition — both as a supplier of the critical materials needed to build the new energy economy and how those materials are produced sustainably. India has set an ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power capacity by 2030, alongside its broader ambition of meeting 50 per cent of its energy requirements from renewable sources and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. This expansion will require significant investments in renewable generation, transmission, power grids, storage and electrification and technology — driving long-term demand for the metals and minerals that underpin this infrastructure. Vedanta's...

The importance of data in driving progress towards the circular packaging economy

The importance of data in driving progress towards the circular packaging economy

Prior to the roll-out of extended producer responsibility for packaging (pEPR), the UK’s approach to capturing, recording and reporting recycling data had remained consistent for years. You had a denominator (market size) and a numerator (number of Packaging Recovery Notes [PRN/PERNs] issued), which provided a simple route to calculate the amount of material recycled against the total volume produced. Although many would argue, myself included, that this approach was far from perfect, it provided clarity and uniformity for businesses and producers. Year after year, the industry used this system to analyse performance, track fluctuating tonnages and understand the short, medium and long-term impact of changing market dynamics. However, with the UK packaging supply chain currently...

EU PPWR brings aluminium coffee capsules under packaging rules from August 2026

The European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) has entered into application, bringing an important regulatory change for coffee capsule recycling across Europe. Under the new rules, coffee capsules are now classified as packaging. Until now, coffee capsules were treated as products rather than packaging. As a result, they were not required to be included in packaging collection, recycling or Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) systems across EU Member States. Even in the absence of such an obligation, several coffee capsule producers have worked with Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs), municipalities and waste-management operators to establish voluntary collection and recycling programmes in different European markets. From August 12, 2026, single-serve...

Alunorte cuts alumina output to 50% as gas disruption threatens up to $100 million Q3 hit

Alunorte has temporarily cut alumina production to 50 per cent after disruptions in natural gas availability affected operations at the refinery. Natural gas supply constraints have prompted Alunorte to introduce contingency measures at its alumina refinery, as the company works to manage the impact of reduced gas availability on operations. Following a notification from its gas supplier, Alunorte introduced a series of contingency measures aimed at limiting the impact on production. These include purchasing gas from the spot market, seeking direct access to the Barcarena LNG receiving and regasification terminal, and adjusting alumina output in line with the available gas supply, as communicated by CELBA. The refinery plans to gradually restore production to full capacity once natural...

Aluminium scrap exports are growing, and much of this metal is ending up with strategic rivals including China, either directly or through third-party countries. The association encourages the Commerce Department to...
