"The PVC component in pharmaceutical packaging is being gradually decreased, with many manufactures bringing it down from 60 microns to 30 microns,’’ Sanjiv Jaggi, Chairman of the subcommittee of the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) and Managing Director (India), Constantia Flexibles, told newspersons at a press conference on Monday to announce a national conference on packaging in Hyderabad, India.

Constantia Flexibles is one of the world's leading manufacturers of flexible packaging and labels in films, aluminium foil and papers. The group supplies its products to numerous multinational corporations and local market leaders in the food, pet food, pharmaceuticals and beverage industries.

According to Prof NC Saha, Director, IIP Indian packaging industry constitutes about 4% of the global packaging industry. The per capita packaging consumption in India is quite low at 8.7 kgs. He feels that organised retail and boom in e-commerce, which offers huge potential for future growth of retailing, is giving a boost to the packaging sector. The Indian packaging market is expected to reach USD 32 billion by 2020.
