Mayor of Swoyersville in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, Chris Concert is asking borough residents to “get off their cans” and start collecting them — aluminium ones, that is — to raise money for upcoming holiday events.
Concert who succeeded long time mayor late Vincent Dennis in May 2015, is known for organizing events that bring families together at little cost. He previously used money raised from an aluminium can collection to host a strawberry social at the Slocum Street Park.
Concert said the aluminium cans collected for Christmas will go to the nearest aluminium can recycling centre, where they will be sorted and made to go through processing to yield secondary aluminium of substantial economic value.
Recycling being the most environmentally sustainable practice needs to be encouraged among all, especially at the grassroot level. Given the high consumption rate of aluminium beverage cans in the US, initiatives such as these will surely be appreciated in all fronts.

Although Concert donates his salary as mayor which comes to a bit over $100 per months to community events, he hopes to raise money through the aluminium can collection to be able to purchase candy, maintain Santa’s outfit and provide for other incidental expenses.
