EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

Renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando has recently unveiled his highly-anticipated design for the MPavilion, which is scheduled to open later this year at Melbourne's Queen Victoria Gardens.

Ando's signature style, characterized by strong geometric forms and the use of simple materials such as concrete and aluminium, is prominently featured in the pavilion's design. The top of the magnificent monument upholds a 14.4-meter aluminium-clad disc, which gives it an ornamental display.

The pavilion's opening will mark the onset of a five-month festival of free programming in the parks aimed at exploring Ando's architectural ideas and concerns and global design debates.

Ando's idea was to construct a meeting place that perfectly blended with the serene atmosphere and the surrounding botanical layout.

Ando illustrated his notion: "MPavilion 10 is designed to encourage encounters between people, the natural world, and endless dialogue."

"The structure features long walls topped by a 14.4-meter aluminium-clad disc, which rests on a central concrete column. From inside, visitors can look out onto the parklands and out to downtown Melbourne via a long opening that measures the length of the north and south walls," it is eminent how aluminium has played a definite role in the making of the cultural centre.

"The design began with a desire to create a sense of eternity within Melbourne's garden oasis," commented Tadao Ando.

"Tadao Ando's architecture is remarkable because it radically affects the way we perceive the world around us," said Naomi Milgrom, commissioner of MPavilion.

She also added: "Like Tadao Ando, I am passionate about architecture that promotes public life and encourages social interaction, and thrilled that Australians will be able to experience directly his genius through this incredibly special meeting place for conversation, the exchange of ideas, and contemplation."

Outlook 2023

While the MPavilion programme's theme is yet to be announced, visitors can expect to witness a series of thought-provoking events and activities that delve deep into the world of architecture and design.
