This is the final stage of upgradation that started with Husnes' Line B and continued with 80 out of 200 electrolytic cells in Line A. Now, the turn has come for the remaining 120 cells, which when completed, Hydro Husnes will become one of the most modern and energy-efficient primary aluminium-producing plants in the world.

Johan Berg, Head of Hydro's aluminium operations in Norway, said: With this investment, we are realizing the full technological potential of the electrolysis by upgrading the remaining 120 cells. We are gearing up for the future."

Hydro Husnes reached its production milestone in June 2021 when it resumed operation in the upgraded Line B after remaining shut since 2009 due to a financial crisis. Now, the attempt is to upgrade Line A to the same standard as Line B.

The upgradation of the plant with state-of-the-art technologies will result in increased energy efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions, leading to aluminium production with a very low carbon footprint compared to the global average.

Berg said, "Our products answer to the climate ambitions of our customers. We see signs that the market is improving and expect the demand for low-carbon aluminium and advanced foundry products to increase while Europe moves towards the green transition. The timing for this upgrade is good."

Other major projects will take place alongside the 120-cell upgrade to improve Husnes' infrastructure. The upgradation work will start in the near future and is expected to be completed during the fall of 2025.
