It is like someone promoting themself by saying that their competitor came in next to last in a 2-man race.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Absurd, yes, yet people are literally buying it!&nbsp; Here is why: The International Annealed Copper Standard (IACS) defines the electrical conductivity of copper as 100%. Definition is important<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aluminium has 200% of the <strong>weight conductivity<\/strong> of copper. IACS is based on <strong>volume conductivity<\/strong>. The answer is in the history of IACS, branding and the tendency to not recognise change that has occurred over a long period of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IACS was created in 1914 by copper wire manufacturers to standardise the purity of copper because the resistance of wires made by different copper companies varied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Wikipedia, the&nbsp;<strong>International Annealed Copper Standard<\/strong>&nbsp;(<strong>IACS<\/strong>) is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Standard_(metrology)\"><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff;color:#171390\" class=\"has-inline-color\">standard<\/mark><\/a>&nbsp;established in 1914 by the United States Department of Commerce.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Annealed_Copper_Standard#cite_note-1\"><sup><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff;color:#171390\" class=\"has-inline-color\">[1]<\/mark><\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;It is an empirically derived standard value for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electrical_conductivity\"><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff;color:#171390\" class=\"has-inline-color\">electrical conductivity<\/mark><\/a>&nbsp;of commercially available&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copper\"><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff;color:#171390\" class=\"has-inline-color\">copper<\/mark><\/a>. Sometime around 1913, several copper samples from 14 important refiners and wire manufacturers were analysed by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U.S._Bureau_of_Standards\"><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff;color:#171390\" class=\"has-inline-color\">U.S. Bureau of Standards<\/mark><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 100% IACS rating for copper is just a benchmark, a nominal value selected to reduce copper variability.&nbsp; It is not the ultimate in conductivity. It does not consider weight because the weight of copper is constant. &nbsp;<strong>IACS is a COPPER PRODUCT STANDARD that was never intended to be used for other metals!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 1944, when aluminium first became available for use as a base metal, copper had enjoyed a 60-year monopoly and was branded as the \u201cMetal of Electrification\u201d. &nbsp;This resulted in copper being the basis of all electrical codes and standards.&nbsp; The National Electrical Code, for example, originally just listed wire sizes with the understanding that they were copper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cCopper, Metal of Electrification\u201d brand has become synonymous with electricity, much like \u201dBand-Aid\u201d has become synonymous with adhesive bandages and \u201cKleenex\u201d with facial tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Picture3.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Picture3.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Picture3.webp 250w, https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Picture3-150x126.webp 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\"><em>Figure 4. World Production of aluminium since 1900<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was only after WWII that aluminium became available for electrical wire and by then IACS was just routinely used without regard to its original intent. The purpose of the standard which was the reduction of copper variability, had long been forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a weight-based aluminium conductivity standard were created with the conductivity of pure aluminium set as a 100% benchmark, copper would have a conductivity of only 50%! &nbsp;The following summarises the two methods of assessing conductivity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Conductivity<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Weight<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Volume<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Aluminium<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>100%<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/td><td><strong>61%<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Copper<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>50%<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/td><td><strong>100%<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\"><em>Figure 5. Weight and Volume Conductivity Ratings<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This illustrates why you should never let your competition define your product.&nbsp; The use of IACS to rate aluminium conductivity without factoring in weight is at the heart of the misconception that copper is a better conductor. It is not. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, because IACS ignores density, the conductivity per dollar is not apparent and the value proposition of the two competing metals is hidden.
