Behind these cycles, however, there is a relentless reduction in real aluminium price over the long term (refer figure 1). This is to be expected in a highly competitive commodity environment.\u00a0 Over time, improvements in technology and operational practices drive efficiency that can lower production costs.\u00a0 This trend places pressure on all operators to continuously improve in order to maintain profitability and the long term viability of their asset.<\/p>\n<p><em>Figure 1: Declining Real Aluminium Price<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blogBATL1-Line-Graph.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blogBATL1-Line-Graph.png\" alt=\"blogBATL1-Line-Graph\" width=\"838\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blogBATL1-Line-Graph.png 838w, https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blogBATL1-Line-Graph-300x143.png 300w, https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blogBATL1-Line-Graph-768x367.png 768w, https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blogBATL1-Line-Graph-150x72.png 150w, https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blogBATL1-Line-Graph-696x332.png 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you do at the bottom of the cycle?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recent years of falling aluminium price, with corresponding falls in alumina price, have resulted in a heavily cost focused alumina refinery industry.\u00a0 Alumina refining is a complex process and presents a challenge to sustain cost reductions through robust and efficient operation.<\/p>\n<p>Cost reduction programs at the bottom of the cycle are generally reactive.\u00a0 Typical targets include personnel reductions, maintenance and capital deferrals as these are the most rapid cost reductions that can be implemented.\u00a0 Frequently cuts are excessive and are ultimately unsustainable.\u00a0 This reactive cost-cutting can result in a long term negative impact on cost curve position as lower maintenance and loss of experience degrade the asset performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So when do you invest in efficiency?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The best strategy is an unrelenting proactive focus on sustainable cost reduction, such that the refinery is well placed when the price cycle starts to hurt again.\u00a0 In this way operators are able to ride through the bottom of the cycle without the need to take severe action liable to cause long term harm.<\/p>\n<p>Sustainable improvement in cost curve position requires process optimisation, innovative design, operational excellence and effective asset management, underpinned by robust systems and effective leadership.<\/p>\n<p>A key focus is looking to optimise efficiencies in energy and raw materials.\u00a0 These represent the majority of refining costs and provide an effective hunting ground for long term cost improvement.\u00a0 Improving both the process and supporting systems can also lead to personnel reductions and reduced maintenance spending, but these reductions are the outcome, not the action of a focus on efficient operation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blog-BATL1-Pie-Chart.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1353\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blog-BATL1-Pie-Chart.png\" alt=\"blog BATL1-Pie-Chart\" width=\"565\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blog-BATL1-Pie-Chart.png 565w, https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blog-BATL1-Pie-Chart-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blog-BATL1-Pie-Chart-150x106.png 150w, https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/blog-BATL1-Pie-Chart-100x70.png 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 565px) 100vw, 565px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A rising alumina price cycle represents an opportunity to reinvest in improvements that boost long term competitive position.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the right time to plan for growth?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The bauxite and alumina industry continues to grow to meet aluminium demand in developing countries.\u00a0 A rising price justifiably draws investment in growth projects. Although debottlenecking and brownfield expansions are often an attractive low CAPEX option, growth projects should also be used as a vehicle to improve efficiency to improve competitive position.<\/p>\n<p>When the alumina price reaches the top of the price cycle operators should be reaping maximum benefit from previous investments.\u00a0 Ironically, reaping this reward requires planning and preparation whilst the price cycle is low.\u00a0 Too often investments miss the cycle with poor initial post-investment returns, frustrating the late investor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lessons learnt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The most astute operators are not victims of the price cycle.\u00a0 Planning and acting within the context of this cycle, while being mindful of the long term price trend, is the recipe for maximising a refinery\u2019s profitability and longevity.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on Advisian please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.advisian.com\/\">www.advisian.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An alumina refinery\u00a0must continually improve to remain competitive.
