But a label on its own doesn&#8217;t mean much. Sustainability claims in aluminium are easy to make and hard to verify. This guide tells you what to look for, what to ask <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcirclebiz.com\/sellerlist\/index\">aluminium suppliers<\/a> and what to avoid so your claim actually holds up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does &#8220;Green Aluminium&#8221; Actually Mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s no single global definition of green aluminium. That&#8217;s the honest answer. The term green aluminium is used to describe aluminium that has a lower carbon footprint than standard smelted metal. But how much lower and measured how, varies widely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In practice, most people mean one of three things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Low-carbon primary aluminium: Made with hydropower or other renewable electricity instead of coal. This significantly reduces emissions at the smelting stage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recycled or secondary aluminium: Made by remelting scrap. And recycled aluminium isn&#8217;t automatically certified. It&#8217;s important to be clear on which type you&#8217;re buying and which type you&#8217;re claiming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the Carbon Footprint Number Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Aluminium production is carbon-intensive. Making one tonne of primary aluminium from bauxite generates, on average, around 16 to 17 tonnes of CO\u2082 equivalent. But that number swings dramatically depending on the electricity source used in smelting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Energy source used in smelting<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Approx. But the gap between coal-based and hydro-based primary aluminium is stark. They&#8217;re not all equal, and they don&#8217;t all measure the same things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Scheme<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>What it covers<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Relevant for buyers?<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>ASI (Aluminium Stewardship Initiative)<\/td><td>Environmental, social and governance performance across the chain. Two standards: Performance and Chain of Custody.<\/td><td>Yes, widely recognised<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>ResponsibleSteel<\/td><td>Steel-focused, but growing into base metals. Less applicable to aluminium directly.<\/td><td>Partial<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Supplier self-declaration (unverified)<\/td><td>Supplier&#8217;s own claim with no third-party audit.<\/td><td>Risk, verify separately<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>ISO 14064<\/td><td>Greenhouse gas quantification and reporting standard. Used to underpin carbon claims.<\/td><td>Yes, supports LCA data<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Low Carbon Aluminium labels (smelter-specific)<\/td><td>Product-level claims made by individual smelters (e.g. Hydro REDUXA, Rusal Allow). Methodology varies.<\/td><td>Useful, check methodology<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>ASI is the most established framework specifically for aluminium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your supplier has ASI Chain of Custody certification, it means the sustainability attributes of the metal can be traced through the supply chain to you. That matters if you&#8217;re passing the claim downstream to your own customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recycled Content: How It Works and What to Check<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Recycled aluminium is, in many ways, the most straightforward green claim. The energy savings are real and well-documented. But there&#8217;s nuance here too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pre-consumer vs post-consumer scrap<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all recycled content is the same in the eyes of your customers or certifiers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Post-consumer recycled (PCR) \u2014 scrap that came from end-of-life products. A drinks can, a car part, a building fa\u00e7ade. This is generally considered the more valuable claim because it diverts waste from landfills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pre-consumer recycled \u2014 manufacturing scrap that never reached a consumer. Offcuts, trimmings, rejected parts. If you&#8217;re making a public sustainability claim, you&#8217;ll want to know this distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How recycled content is measured and traded<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Because aluminium alloys are often blends, &#8220;recycled content&#8221; is typically measured at the point of production and reported as a percentage. Two main accounting methods exist:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Physical allocation: The recycled content in your specific parcel of metal is physically traceable. Harder to achieve at scale.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mass balance: Recycled inputs are tracked across a production system, and the sustainable attributes are allocated to buyers proportionally. More common, but requires a robust chain of custody to be credible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Mass balance is widely accepted in certified systems. But ask your supplier which approach they use and whether it&#8217;s third-party verified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Greenwashing: What It Looks Like in Aluminium<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Greenwashing isn&#8217;t always deliberate. Sometimes it&#8217;s sloppy language. But if your business makes a sustainability claim that turns out to be inaccurate, the reputational and legal risk falls on you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the most common problems buyers encounter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vague claims with no data: &#8220;Our aluminium is sustainably sourced.&#8221; What does that mean? Sourced from where? Measured how?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carbon figures without scope clarity: A supplier quotes a PCF but excludes upstream emissions (Scope 3). The number looks good, but doesn&#8217;t tell the full story.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certification mismatch: The smelter is ASI-certified, but the supplier isn&#8217;t. Or the certification covers operations but not the specific product you&#8217;re buying.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Renewable energy claims without additionality: A smelter buys renewable energy certificates (RECs) to offset grid electricity. That&#8217;s not the same as running on actual renewable power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recycled label on primary metal: This is rare but does happen. Always ask for documentation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;A label isn&#8217;t a claim. A claim needs data behind it.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to Ask Your Supplier: A Checklist for Green Aluminium<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you pass any sustainability claim on to your customers, work through these questions with your supplier:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/?cbam=true\">carbon intensity<\/a> of this metal, in tCO\u2082e per tonne of aluminium produced?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which lifecycle stages are included in that figure (cradle to gate? cradle to grave?)?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What energy source powers the smelter?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is the smelter or supplier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/a-simple-guide-to-asis-performance-and-chain-of-custody-standards\">ASI-certified<\/a>? If so, which standard (Performance or Chain of Custody)?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What percentage of this material is recycled content? Is that pre-consumer, post-consumer, or both?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How is recycled content accounted for \u2014 physical or mass balance?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is there a third-party verified product carbon footprint (PCF) document we can receive?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can you provide documentation for all of the above?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>A credible supplier will answer most of these without hesitation. If they struggle, that&#8217;s useful information too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Regulatory Context: Why This Is Getting More Important<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainability claims aren&#8217;t just a nice-to-have. Regulation is tightening and aluminium buyers in Europe and beyond need to be aware of two things in particular:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcircle.com\/blog\/understanding-the-carbon-border-adjustment-mechanism-cbam-a-comprehensive-guide-for-businesses-and-policymakers\">CBAM<\/a> came into its transitional phase in October 2023 and applies to aluminium imports into the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2026, importers will need to buy certificates covering the embedded carbon in their imports. The carbon intensity of your aluminium will directly affect your costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means buyers sourcing high-carbon aluminium from coal-heavy regions will face rising import costs. Low-carbon metal, particularly hydro-powered primary or recycled content, will be comparatively cheaper to import.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EU Green Claims Directive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU is finalising rules that require sustainability claims made to consumers to be substantiated by independent verification. While this targets consumer-facing claims, the evidence trail starts with your supply chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your product says &#8220;made with low-carbon aluminium,&#8221; you&#8217;ll need to prove it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bottom line: <\/strong>Sustainability claims that couldn&#8217;t be backed up with documentation were always a risk. From 2026 onwards, that risk is financial as well as reputational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Note on Scope 3 Emissions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your business reports against a science-based target or net-zero commitment, your purchased aluminium sits in your Scope 3 emissions (category 1: purchased goods and services). This is often the largest and hardest-to-reduce chunk of a manufacturer&#8217;s or buyer&#8217;s carbon footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sourcing lower-carbon aluminium is one of the most direct levers you have to reduce that figure. But it only works if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The carbon figure from your supplier is verified and documented<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can show the chain of custody from the smelter to your gate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You&#8217;re using a recognised methodology to calculate and report the reduction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A supplier claiming &#8220;green aluminium&#8221; with no PCF data doesn&#8217;t help you report credibly.
