The strongly global economy of Belgium which boasts one of the largest glass industries in the world is also characterised by the presence of a large number of aluminium fabrication industries and aluminium scrap shredders. International trade data reveals that aluminium scrap export from Belgium has declined over the last three years. The reason behind the decline is mainly increase of aluminium recycling within the country. However, with global competition rising Belgium too has lagged behind the US, Australia, Japan and other European countries in terms of aluminium scrap generation. {alcircleadd}As a logical consequence, value of Belgium’s aluminium scrap export has also decreased since 2015 till 2017. In 2015, total aluminium scrap export by Belgium was valued at US$362 million (262334 tonnes), which dropped to US$282 million (242826 tonnes) last year. In 2017, value of aluminium export is estimated to reach US$327 million (239969 tonnes).
Belgium has been exporting heavily its aluminium scrap commodities to countries in the Middle East and South East Asia apart from European nations. The major aluminium scrap commodities exported annually include aluminium scrap taint/tabor, aluminium scrap terse, aluminium scrap tread, and aluminium scrap tense.

China is a key market for Belgian aluminium scrap. In May this year, the Asian giant imported 1,191 tonnes of aluminium scrap from Belgium, down 35.25 per cent from previous year, and 14,761 tonnes in the first five months of 2017, up by 53.83 per cent from the corresponding period previous year. China will continue to be a major export destination for Belgium’s aluminium scrap industry in the years to come.
