Bermuda government has restarted operations at its Material Recovery Facility at Devon Springs in Bermuda. The facility recycles 50 tonnes of aluminium cans, tins cans and glass bottles through Bermuda’s blue bag recycling programme. The blue bag recycling programme focuses on all recyclable materials that must be cleaned and dried and then put in a blue recycle bag.

A government spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Public Works would like to advise the public that the Material Recovery Facility, also known as the recycling facility, is now back up and running at full capacity”.
“The backlog of materials held at the old recycling centre at Devon Springs has been removed and processed. Bermuda’s blue bag recycling programme captures TAG – tin cans [steel], aluminium cans and glass bottles. An average of 50 tonnes of material is recycled each month.

He further added, “Metals such as steel and aluminium are shipped to the US where they are melted down into sheet metal and used to make new consumer items. Recycling produces 95% less effluent and emissions than using raw materials”.
“Recyclables are subject to market fluctuations, so the ability to hold these materials on island aids the Ministry by allowing shipments when market prices are high. Glass is used on-island as a drainage medium in road works, backfill and landscaping projects,” he concluded.
