54 year old takes charity walk to deliver 40 pounds of aluminium can pull-tabs for recycling

AL Circle

Phil Wright of Decatur, a 54-year-old year gentleman completed a charity walk of more than 26 miles to Dawson pulling a wagon filled with about 40 pounds of pull-tabs from aluminium cans amid freezing cold and sharp wind. He delivered the aluminium pull-tabs at Springfield's Ronald McDonald House for recycling.  In addition to the 40 pounds that Phil pulled, there were 38.2 pounds that wouldn't fit in his wagon.

As explained by the representatives of the charity fund, they collect the pull-tabs throughout the year and get about 25 cents per pound when they recycle the aluminium. The money is utilized to cover costs at the house, which provides free lodging to patient’s families with loved ones at one of the hospitals in Springfield.

Johanna Moll, development and communications coordinator at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Illinois appreciated Wright’s genuine contribution.

"We definitely think it's incredible," Moll said. “to say that someone walked 26 to 27 miles to bring them to us is quite remarkable. We really appreciate that he decided to deliver them to us in that way, and it definitely shows he's dedicated to our charity."

This was the second time Wright has set out from Decatur for Springfield to donate the pull-tabs. In August 2014, he walked the 34-mile route in 100 degrees temperature.

Wright appreciated several businesses in the Decatur area that helped him collect the aluminium can pull tabs. Moll said the Ronald McDonald House gets pull-tab donations about every day which are taken to recycling center at regular intervals.

She confirmed that, last year, about $10,000 was raised through aluminium pull-tabs recycling.

"It translates into money for us to continue to provide the services that we do for the families that are staying with us free of charge," Moll said.

What is noteworthy is that they have been informed by the recycling center that there is actually more aluminium in the pull-tabs than the entire can. They have better density and take up lesser space than cans for storing.
