Talga Group wraps up front-end engineering and design for the Vittangi anode project

Green battery anode and advanced materials developer Talga Group is considering its next steps following the conclusion of front-end engineering and design (FEED) activities at the Vittangi anode project in northern Sweden.

With a market capitalization of $281 million, Talga reports that the collaboration with key consultants Worley, ABB, and Sweco has resulted in significant enhancements and optimizations across various aspects of the project. These improvements encompass equipment design, production process configurations, and building footprints.

The construction costs for the vertically integrated operation are now projected at €560 million, with an additional €39 million contingency. This represents a modest increase from the previous estimate of US$484 million in the July 2021 Definitive Feasibility Study, adjusted for inflationary macro environments.

Through meticulous final equipment design, Talga has optimised production lines at the Luleå Anode Refinery to achieve an annual output of 19,500 tonnes of Talga's natural graphite anode product, Talnode-C. This optimization has reduced the refinery building's footprint and decreased the entire project's energy requirements by 23 per cent.

Furthermore, this effort has refined the configurations of the anode production process to meet customers' specifications, supported by the successful completion of Talnode-C qualification. These advancements also bolster Talga's ongoing negotiations with customers for offtake agreements.

Mark Thompson, the Managing Director, emphasises the importance of Vittangi's development in enhancing the resilience of the global supply chain, particularly in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle and energy storage sectors.

Talga Resources is constructing a European supply chain for battery materials to provide essential components for the green transition. The company remains engaged in evaluating and tendering various contracts, equipment, and operational options as it moves closer to making a final investment decision.
