
Oman is Middle East’s fifth-largest producer of aluminium after the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. International mining players have taken keen interest in the country for investment in recent years. Oman is well positioned geographically and logistically for distribution of metals and minerals to southern and eastern Asia.

{alcircleadd}Sohar Aluminium was formed in September 2004 to undertake a landmark Greenfield aluminium smelter project in the Sultanate of Oman and is jointly owned by Oman Oil Company, Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC - TAQA and Rio Tinto Alcan. The company accounts for the total aluminium production in the country. The Sohar aluminium smelter has an annual production capacity of 375,000 tonnes of high quality Aluminium. SA is keen on supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and has executed a number of projects to establish and sustain SMEs. The company exports a large portion of its products and the rest is consumed by local downstream industries.

Our data shows that, in the year 2015, the total aluminium export by Oman was 2,35,126 tons. In 2016, the export is estimated to increase to 2,69,722 tons. The total estimated value of aluminium export was USD 704 million and USD 970 million respectively.
A forecast for the first eleven months of 2017 shows, the aluminium export by Oman would be about 2,87,268 tons and the value of export would stand at about USD 1.1 billon.

Most of Oman's aluminium exports go to Malaysia. South Korea, India and Indonesia and Japan account for a large portion of Oman’s export. Oman Aluminium Rolling Company LLC (OARC) and Oman Aluminium Processing Industries LLC (OAPIL) are the downstream partners for Sohar Aluminium that consume the substantial part of Sohar’s aluminium production domestically.
