Kazakhstan Aluminium Smelter produced over 235,000 tons of primary aluminium in 2016

EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

Eurasian Resources Group said on Monday January 9 that its Kazakhstan Aluminium Smelter JSC (KAS) has produced more than 235,000 tons of primary aluminium in 2016, exceeding the annual production target. Since the inception of plant, this was plant’s highest production volumes in the history of plant in nine years.
KAS, the only aluminium producer in the Republic of Kazakhstan, has an aluminium capacity of 250 thousand tons per year. In 2016, the plant ran at 94% of its design capacity with an increase of 6.3% over 2015. According to plant’s figures, per reduction cell averaged 2,446 kilograms of primary aluminium.

While attaining this huge jump in production, the company also brought down the electrical consumption from 13,460 kWh to 12, 746 kWh. The achievement was possible by lowering the default voltage on reduction cells from 4.05 volts to 3.99 volts.

As per the company, production technology applied at KAS has “significant environmental credentials.” This put the plant among world's ten best aluminium producers. The prebaked anode technology, an environment supporting technique that was applied in aluminium production by the KAS helped the company to produce 136,000 metric tons of proprietary anodes in 2016. Recently, KAS was awarded a “Quality Leader” award by the Kazakh government at the Altyn Sapa Awards of the President of Kazakhstan.

According to the company, the plant has reduced the power used per ton of primary aluminium production threefold in the last nine years by implemeting closed waste-management cycle and use of gas-cleaning equipment specially manufactured for the plant by Alstom. This technology seizes 99.7% of the plant’s harmful emissions. KAS has also introduced an ISO 50001 energy-management system in 2014, reducing electrolytic aluminium power consumption by 1.4% vs. standard value, and 2.7% vs. design value.
