Aluminium scrap import by Indonesia has surged significantly over the last two years as the country is on the verge of becoming an important downstream aluminium product manufacturing hub in south-east Asia, catering mostly to the automotive industry. The country purchased 55,059.5 tonnes of scrap aluminium in 2015, which increased by 28.5 per cent year-over-year to reach 70773.12 tonnes last year. In 2017, till October, Indonesia is estimated to import around 62,159.8 tonnes of aluminium scrap for recycling, up 4.6 per cent from the corresponding period previous year.

The import value of scrap aluminium in Indonesia has also increased in tandem with the volume. Last year, the South-east Asian country purchased scrap aluminium worth US$96.8 million, up 33.14 per cent from US$72.7 million in 2015. This year, till October only, the total import value of aluminium scrap is estimated to reach almost US$85 million, surpassing previous year’s value for the same period by 4.9 per cent.




The aluminium scrap export data for Indonesia shows a similar uptrend. The volume and value of exports though much lower than import have increased year-on-year over the last two years. As per statistics, Indonesia stands as a net importer of scrap aluminium.

Indonesia shipped a total volume of 14,705.06 tonnes of aluminium scrap in 2015, which increased 8.5 per cent to reach 15,956.5 tonnes last year. In 2017, till October, the country is estimated to export around 12,117.7 tonnes of the scrap metal. Year-over-year value growth of imports was registered at 40.8 per cent rate. This year, till August, the total value of aluminium scrap exports is estimated to reach US$61.7 million, up per cent from the same period previous year.


According to the latest industry data, Australia, USA, and the United Kingdom were the top scrap aluminium supplying countries of Indonesia, whereas, the top destinations of aluminium scrap export by the South-east Asian country were China, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea.
