An Interview with Mr. Stefano Giacometti, Sales Director, IMS Deltamatic Group S.p.a., Italy at METEF 2017
IMS Deltamatic Group, born from the synergy of two specialized and diversified companies, has emerged as the international reference point in manufacturing of innovative technologically advanced machinery as well as service solutions for the web-converting (IMS and OMM brands) and automotive interior manufacturing industries. Mr. Stefano Giacometti who joined the company (Deltamatic) back in 1992 is presently Sales Director for the Converting Foil & Aseptic Division and for the Automotive Thermoforming Division.
AlCircle had the opportunity to meet Mr. Giacometti at the recently held Metef 2017 in Verona, Italy, where IMS Deltamatic was exhibiting. He spoke about the company’s journey as a leading aluminium foil machining company and opportunities and challenges in the global downstream aluminium sector.
Here is an excerpt from the interview:
AlCircle: From a manufacturer of only automatic thermoforming lines for automotive interiors to a diversified engineering company - how has been the journey so far for IMS Deltamatic?
Stefano Giacometti: Deltamatic is the brand engaged in the design and manufacture of thermoforming lines for Automotive Interior trims. When in the year 2000, we decided to diversify and enlarge, we joined forces with IMS, with over 50 years’ experience in the converting industry, and then moved on with a number of acquisitions both in the Converting (Officine Meccaniche del Maglio, Rotomac, GOEBEL Schneid- und Wickelsysteme active since 1851) as well as Automotive field (Kasper Machine Company and Deltamould).
AlCircle: Which are the markets you think would drive the demand for aluminium foil manufacturing equipment in 2017 and beyond?
Stefano Giacometti: Presently the Indo-Asiatic markets are the most active in terms of volumes, whereas Europe is always driving in terms of specialty equipment.
AlCircle: Lightweight automotive demand is set to rise globally. What kind of traction do you expect for aluminium automotive body parts segment from this trend?
Stefano Giacometti: The trend is certainly clear and defined for body parts, whereas our involvement is mostly in light foil (GOEBEL IMS brand) for use for instance in automotive heat exchangers or otherwise on thermoplastic soft trims (Deltamatic brand), which do not include aluminium with exception of some alu-inserts for heat shield function. A separate mention is for the Deltamold Division, where we build low pressure/gravity tools for alu-castings, where we certainly note a strong increment in market demand for new applications.
AlCircle: Tell us something about your Specials Divisions? Any technology innovation IMS Deltamatic is working on to strengthen this portfolio?
Stefano Giacometti: In the converting field, where we operate with the GOEBEL IMS brand, we are pushing hard on quality and high performance (up to 1.500m/min speed) for the RU6 slitter-rewinder designed for fin stock for heat exchanger; also we are developing in 4-hands-partnership with Achenbach a new very sophisticated slitter-rewinder for ultra-thin soft annealed foil (6µm), with wide foil width (1.800mm), important diameter (800mm in slitting mode, 1.000mm in re-reeling mode), with ultrasonic foil welding.
Our Rotomac brand, specialized in rewinding machines for the production of food wrapping rolls, is consolidating its strong presence in automatic rewinding machines for the production of micro-embossed alufoil rolls.
AlCircle: What are the major challenges in the market for IMS Deltamatic?
Stefano Giacometti: The challenge is to keep growing and drive new ideas and conceptual approaches to improve processes, quality and worldwide Customers’ support. The presence of a Sales and Service office in China demonstrates how the Group wants to be close to all the Customers located in Asia.
AlCircle: Do you believe that value-addition and downstream manufacturing is the ‘future’ of the global aluminium industry?
Stefano Giacometti: There is no doubt that creating attractive packages for Customers is the key to strengthen market penetration. Customers should concentrate on their job, while we take care of the optimization of machine park and processes.
