India produces a substantial amount of downstream aluminium products. The country has top companies’ with their downstream operations. India’s total flat rolled products (FRP) capacity stands at about 400,000 tonnes. Balco’s Korba rolling plant produced about 18,000 tonnes of rolled products during FY2017 after resuming operations.
Based on the flat growth percentage of 25 per cent for the aluminium consumption in 2016, FRP demand should currently be at an approximate range of 600,000-650,000 tonnes. India will need about 5,000 tonnes of high-end alloy plates over the next five years .
{alcircleadd}According to Crisil Report, India would grow from 3.3 MT in 2015-16 to 5.3 MT in 2020-21 due to a host of government initiatives like, Make in India, Smart Cities, Housing for all, rural electrification, and freight corridors.
The demand for aluminium flat rolled products is rising internationally especially from developing countries due to the increased demand from the transportation sector. The global demand for flat rolled and extruded aluminium products is projected to grow 5-6 per cent CAGR between 2016 and 2020. Due to this, India is expected to export more of these products in 2017 as compared to last two years.
Let us analyse the patterns for aluminium plates, sheets and strips export by the India. In 2015, India exported about 76218 tons of aluminium plates, sheets and strips. The amount increased to 77117 tons in 2016. The country is forecasted to export about 77343 tons of aluminium plates, sheets and strips in 2017.
In 2015, the country’s total revenue from aluminium plates, sheets and strips export was USD 193.56 million. India’s export revenue from these products dropped in 2016. The total value was USD 181.93 million. The revenue from export is estimated to be about USD 197.67 million in 2017.

USA imported an estimated 22726 tons of aluminium plates, sheets and strips in 2016. India exported an estimated 15141 tons and 4353 tons of aluminium plates, sheets and strips to UAE and Nigeria respectively.
