China’s aluminium alloy ingot export grew 3.37 per cent to reach 45,117 tonnes in April 2017. According to the import-export data released by China’s General administration of Customs, the cumulative export volume of aluminium alloy ingots from the country stood during January-April period stood at 162,104 tonnes. The increase is in contrast with the two-yearly aluminium alloy export trend that has been declining since 2015.

In 2016, China exported 508,387 tonnes of aluminium alloy compared to 544,266 tonnes in 2015. In the first quarter of 2017 (i.e. April to June) the country is estimated to export 132,536 tonnes. Earnings from aluminium alloy export have grown on a yearly basis, as per international trade statistics. Revenues totalled US$1.17 billion in 2016, up from US$1.09 billion in 2015. In the first quarter of fiscal year 2017-18, the revenue is estimated to reach US$0.32 billion.

News

The countries which purchased maximum quantity of aluminium alloy ingots from China during the period under review were Japan (30,725 tonnes), Hong Kong (6,740 tonnes), Vietnam (1,602 tonnes), Taiwan (1,598 tonnes), and Thailand (1,215 tonnes). The US imported only 56 tonnes and India-159 tonnes in April 2017, both down by 58 per cent and 52 per cent from the corresponding period previous year. Australia’s import of Chinese aluminium alloy also increased by 34 per cent and reached 653 tonnes in April 2017.

Looking at imports, China kept importing aluminium alloy in larger quantities than it did a year ago. The figures grew at 2 per cent annual growth rate reaching 4,193 tonnes by the end of April 2017. The total aluminium alloy ingot import from the global market during the initial four months of 2017 reached 18,934 tonnes.

The interesting fact is China procured a major chunk of its domestic aluminium alloy requirement from the UAE. Imports from the Middle East country literally ballooned by 81 per cent to reach 1,427 tonnes in April 2017. The UAE exported a total of 3,588 tonnes aluminium alloy ingots to China during January-April this year.

News

The UAE is gradually growing in strength in high-end aluminium alloy production. Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) with its the two operations manufactures high-purity aluminium ingots and advanced aluminium alloy ingots for high-precision use in the electronics and aerospace industries. Another company, the leading aluminium extruder Taweelah Aluminium Extrusion Company (TALEX) L.L.C. is also working on expansion plans to market its proprietary hard alloys, specifically suited for sophisticated engineering applications.

It is clear that aluminium alloy ingot export from this newly emerging aluminium hub will further increase in the coming years. It is to be seen to extent it is able to match up to the aluminium alloy production capability of China, and by when.
