National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco) owned Panchpatmali Bauxite Mines in Odisha has been accredited with the 5-Star Rating by the India Ministry of Mines in a stringent evaluation process conducted up by IBM.
The honour along with the certificate of excellence was handed over to Nalco's chief managing director Dr. Tapan Kumar Chand by he Union Minister of Power, Coal, New & Renewable Energy and Mines Shri Piyush Goyal during the 2nd National Conclave on Mines and Mineral held yesterday at Delhi. The event was graced by the Secretary, Ministry of Mines, Shri Balvinder Kumar.
The award acknowledges the Indian aluminium major's continuous effort to remain sustainable in its everyday business practices through implementation of the Sustainable Development Framework (SDF). The framework involves implementing best of sustainable practices in bauxite mining operations, the priority areas being environment protection, rehabilitation and reclaimation of the mined out area and social development.

The Ministry of Mines instituted star rating scheme has an in-built compliance mechanism for forest and environment safeguards and helps in identifying performers in the mining sector while encouraging other players to strive for excellence in the same manner.
On being recognized as a frontrunner in the Indian mining sector, Dr. Chand said, “The award is testimony to the tireless efforts of the Nalconians and the best practices being implemented by the company since its inception." He dedicated the award to the employees and other stakeholders of Nalco who put in collective efforts to make Panchpatmali Bauxite Mines a sustainable project.
