The growing demand for aluminium driven by increasing urbanization and industrialization is driving demand for alumina worldwide. The global high purity alumina market size was estimated at 25,315 tonnes per annum in 2016. A recent study says the demand for the commodity will grow at a CAGR of 16.7% from 2016 through 2024.
Canada is the 11th largest export economy in the world. Canada exports significant amount of alumina globally. The country exported less alumina in 2016 as compared to last year. This year, Canada’s alumina export is estimated to rise significantly.
{alcircleadd}Rio Tinto Alcan’s Vaudreuil alumina refinery produces 1 500 000 tonnes of alumina and specialty products (hydrates, aluminium fluoride) per annum. The refinery supplies to the smelter located in the region, which is converted into primary aluminium in the Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean smelters.
According to the recent estimate, Canada exported an estimated 29473 tonnes of alumina in 2015. The amount decreased to 14238 tonnes of alumina in 2016. The export of alumina is expected to increase drastically in 2017. The country is forecasted to increase its export of alumina of about 45862 tonnes in 2017.
The total estimated export revenue stood at USD 25.74 million in 2015. The country’s export value is also dropped in 2016. Canada’s revenue stood at about USD 17.91 million in 2016. The total revenue from export of alumina by Canada is also estimated to increase significantly in 2017. The country is forecasted to generate revenue of about USD 42.15 million this year.

India imported a substantial amount of alumina from Canada. The country is one of the major importers of alumina from Canada. India imported an estimated 4175 tonnes of alumina in 2016. United Kingdom imported 3012 tons and Nigeria 1130 tonnes of alumina from Canada.
