China is one of the world’s top alumina producers and a leading supplier of alumina to the global primary aluminium industry. China has around 60 million tonnes of alumina capacity but produced around 47.3 million tonnes of the aluminium-making ingredient from January to October last year. The country boasts world’s top alumina producers like Aluminum Corp of China (CHALCO), Shandong Xinfa Aluminium Group and China Hongqiao Group.
{alcircleadd}Aluminum Corp of China (CHALCO), the country's biggest producer of alumina and primary aluminium, posted profits of 330 million yuan ($49.4 million) during the first half of the year, the highest level in almost five years, attributed mostly to the reduction in the CoP of alumina and aluminium.
An analysis of the trading patterns of alumina in China will give an insight about the domestic and international alumina market.
In 2014, China exported 219957 tons of alumina globally. The total value of aluminium export was USD 194 million. The amount jumped up to 395684 tons in 2015 registering a slight growth. In 2015, alumina export delivered USD 233 million revenue to the exporters. In 2016, China is estimated to export 458025 tons of alumina globally with a revenue realization of USD 260 million.
China exported 46854 tons of alumina to India in 2015. The amount is estimated to increase to 51441 tons in 2016. China also exports a substantial amount of alumina to UAE. In 2015, UAE imported 28253 tons of alumina from China and in 2015 the country. Other countries that import alumina from China are Iran, Indonesia and USA.

China’s alumina exports to the international markets faced a slowdown in August and January-August periods in 2016 in comparison previous year’s export volumes as the domestic consumption started rising after the restarting of closed capacity and newly opened aluminium capacity..
